| Abstract: |
• The KMgF 3 film displayed an ingrowth model. • The formation of KMgF 3 limited its further growth. • KMgF 3 reduced corrosion current density of AZ31 Mg alloy by 20 times. • KMgF 3 was protective due to its stability in NaCl solution. A KMgF 3 film was fabricated on AZ31 Mg alloy using a two−step approach−first forming a MgF 2 film by immersion in 0.1 mol·dm-3 NH 4 F solution with pH 7, and then growing KMgF 3 by soaking in 1 mol·dm-3 KF solution with pH 7. The growth of KMgF 3 was investigated by analyzing its morphological, structural and compositional evolution. The corrosion resistance of the MgF 2 and KMgF 3 coated AZ31 Mg alloy was compared in 3.5 % NaCl solution with pH 7. The results showed that KMgF 3 grew in an ingrowth mode through KF diffusion into MgF 2 film. The formation of KMgF 3 blocked the diffusion of KF, inducing a decrease in the content and the formation rate of KMgF 3 with immersion time. KMgF 3 respectively reduced corrosion current density of AZ31 Mg alloy and the MgF 2 film coated AZ31 Mg alloy by 20 times and 18 times, due to chemical stability of KMgF 3 in NaCl solution.
