Abstract: This research article details the work undertaken to identify and classify cryptocurrency-themed malicious browser extensions in order to determine suitable countermeasures. A systematic study yielded 186 malicious extensions within a population of 3600 extensions. Then the malicious extensions were classified into five categories—including life cycle and illegal gains—and then a systematic detection approach was compiled and presented taking metadata features, programmatic features and execution features in consideration.
