Abstract: • A unified power flow control strategy for multi-phase flexibly interconnected traction power supply system with multi-railway power conditioner is proposed to improve friendliness of electrified railway to the utility grid and energy efficiency along the railway line in real-time operation. • A power flow optimization model for the real-time upper-layer power management of the multi-phase flexibly interconnected traction power supply system with multi-railway power conditioner is constructed, which does not require additional decoupling of active and reactive power. • The seeker optimization algorithm is further improved based on proper expansion of the empirical directions (To expand the empirical directions that seekers refer to in deciding their search directions) and polarization of the search directions (To properly polarize the probabilities of the positive and negative search directions). Due to the active power transmission and reactive power compensation characteristics of railway power conditioner (RPC), the multi-phase flexibly interconnected traction power supply system (FITPSS) realized by multiple RPCs bridges neutral sections in both traction substations (TSSs) and section posts (SPs). It is an efficient scheme with relatively high energy efficiency and friendliness to the utility grid in AC electrified railways. However, the introduction of RPCs changes the electrical structure and the traditional power flow mode in a TPSS. To reliably ensure the friendliness of FITPSS to the power system and the upgraded energy efficiency, a unified power flow control strategy based on imbalance-loss suppression is proposed to achieve real-time determination and tracking of reference power for all RPCs. It consists of optimal upper-layer power management in complex number field without additional power decoupling, and lower-layer converter control. Besides, a seeker optimization algorithm with improved search direction (SOA-ISD) is proposed to solve the continuous nonlinear programming problem posed by the unified power flow control. Finally, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed strategy are validated via numerical simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) experiment based on data from an actual electrified railway. The results indicate that the reduction ratio of negative-sequence current ranging from 6.82% to 99.99% with a median of 96.56%, the improvement rate of voltage deviation 16.16% at most, and the decreasing ratio of network loss up to 51.04% achieved by the proposed strategy.
