Celsian (BaAl2Si2O8) was identified for the first time in Bulgaria in Ca-skarns associated with the Teshevo granodiorite pluton. The rhythmically banded skarn zones formed along late-magmatic aplite/pegmatite dykes crosscuting both the granodiorite and the host marble. Skarn is composed mainly of garnet (grossular) and diopside. Celsian occurs as: i) euhedral crystals in garnet, commonly altered in variable extent to (Ba, K)-feldspar (hyalophane), or as ii) anhedral grains dispersed in the calc-silicate matrix. Electron-microprobe and LA-ICP-MS analyses show that BaO dominates the feldspar composition (37.9–40.3 wt%), whereas substitutions of K, Na, and Ca are minor. Strontium (up to 2483 ppm) is the most abundant trace element, whereas transition metals (Cu, Zn) and Ga were found in tens of ppm only; Y and Eu content are detectable but very low. The data indicate crystallization from Ba-rich hydrothermal fluids during late-magmatic to post-metasomatic stages. Celsian likely reflects Ba introduction by external fluids and records the evolution of metasomatic processes in skarns in the vicinity of the Teshevo pluton. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
