Abstract: As an economic and robust solution to the sustainable energy resource, the monopile foundation has been utilized in most offshore wind farms. In design practice, usually the p-y method is applied in the calculation of the monopile static behavior, while the effect of cyclic loading with varying number of cycles also requires accurate consideration. Hence, a calculation method termed "Stiffness Degradation Method" has been applied in numerical simulations to calculate pile behavior, dependent on the actual number of cycles and with that also p-y curves for a given number of load cycles were derived. From the calculation results, a simple-to-use approach for rigid monopile foundations named "Cyclic Overlay Model" for the derivation of cyclic p-y curves has been proposed. Therefore, a concise introduction to this semi-analytical approach is provided. Recently, a research project named "Ho-Pile" involving large-scale tests for horizontally loaded piles was planned and conducted. In this article, the results of experimental investigations have been evaluated specifically for the first 10,000 load cycles. Here, the usability of the Cyclic Overlay Model for a practically operational magnitude of cyclic loading was proven by a comparison with other cyclic proposals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
