| Abstract (English): |
Soil organic matter (SOM) is the most widely used indicator of soil health, as it influences the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the soil. Traditionally, SOM is determined through wet or dry combus-tion. In this work, a rapid, economical, non-destructive, and precise methodology for estimating SOM, such as diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the visible range (VIS) (350-750 nm) was evaluated. A total of 187 soil samples from Santiago del Estero (SE) [San José de Boquerón (SJB), n=79; Añatuya (A), n=108] and 409 samples from southern Santa Fe (SF) were taken to determine SOM by wet combustion and by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. SOM determined by wet combustion ranged from 0.75 to 6.13% in SJB, from 1.70 to 2.41% in A, and from 1.04 to 9.27% in SF. Variation in SOM was also observed when comparing land uses: mixed farming system (AGR-GAN) (2.96%) > livestock system (GAN) (2.67%) > agriculture (AGR) (2.43%). Additionally, the PARLES software was used for chemometric analysis. Models behavior (observed vs. estimated data) showed that transformation and differentiation were significant manipulation factors. In SE, the results were pooled (SJB+A) and an estimation equation was obtained with a determination coefficient of 0.12. A segmental fit of 0.41 was found in SF, following the 1:1 line at values below 5.03%, while there was an underestimation at higher values. Considering land use, livestock system showed better fits on the 1:1 line (R2=0.84). The results account for the differences in carbon content across different sites and different land uses. Although organic matter estimation based on a simple methodology such as diffuse reflectance in the VIS spectrum appears to be promising, it is necessary to explore the robustness of this methodology throughout other management conditions and regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
