Abstract: This study aims to synthesize AA7075/SiO2/AC hybrid aluminium composites using ultrasonic stir casting method with different amounts of reinforcement, SiO2 served as the primary reinforcement, while activated carbon (AC) acted as secondary reinforcement, added in weight percentages of SiO2 ranging from 0 to 8% and activated carbon of 2% being kept constant. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, and hardness were tested and evaluated. The findings revealed about 42.36% increase in hardness and 49.40% increase UTS (ultimate tensile strength) for AA7075/6% SiO2/2%AC hybrid composite compared to base matrix alloy. The microstructural analysis by optical microscopy (OM) and FESEM showed that the reinforcement particles were evenly spread in the matrix alloy without forming clusters. Interfacial reactions indicated the presence of Mg2Si precipitates and undissolved Al6(Fe, Mn) in aluminium solution. Adding stronger and stiffer reinforcements increased the composite hardness. Moreover, the presence of AA7075/6wt.% SiO2/2wt.%AC reinforcements greatly improved the tensile strength and wear resistance of the aluminium hybrid composite compared to base matrix.
