| Abstract: |
The study examined how potassium perchlorate (KClO4) affected energy release, thrust generation, and specific impulse in aluminium-copper oxide (Al/CuO) nanothermite. Al/CuO/KClO4 nanothermites with varying weight percentages (wt.%) of KClO4 was synthesized using the physical mixing method. To identify nanothermite constituents' crystalline phase, x-ray diffraction (XRD) was performed. The surface morphology of the samples was examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and the elemental composition was analyzed through energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). With varied KClO4 weight percentages, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed energy release improvements. The maximum energy release, i.e., 1387 J/g, was achieved by Al/CuO/KClO4 (4 wt.%). The Al/CuO/KClO4 (4 wt.%) nanothermite generated a peak thrust of 21.42 N and a maximum specific impulse of 45.6 s, which is 2.13 times greater than the specific impulse of Al/CuO.
