| Abstract: |
The degree of sensitization (%DoS) correlative to the susceptibility of AISI 310 stainless steels to intergranular corrosion (IGC) in CO-containing atmospheres (15-45% CO, bal. N2) at 600-900 °C was evaluated. The IGC susceptibility, relating to chromium carbide formation at the grain boundaries of the stainless steels, causes carburization and corrosion damage of boiler components in renewable energy power plants. The IGC susceptibility of AISI 310 s steels, determined by the %DoS, increased at higher temperatures and CO content at 700 °C. The increase in Cr23C6 carbide size and fraction concurred with the high %DoS. The carbide growth showed a sevenfold increase after raising the temperature from 600 to 900 °C due to high carbon penetration. At 700 °C, the carbide size and percentage doubled when the CO content increased by 30%, leading to a fivefold increase in the %DoS. Up to 800 °C, the %DoS was higher than 30%, with carbide growth of more than 0.15 μm and 0.6%. However, the %DoS increased slowly with suppression of carbide growth when high oxide thicknesses of Cr2O3, FeCr2O4 and Fe2O3 formed at 900 °C. The relationship between carbide growth and %DoS can be utilized to predict the susceptibility of AISI 310 steel under carburization damage conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
