Abstract: By providing structured data as well as documents, digital editions offer new tools for historical research, which this paper intends to demonstrate by making reference to two different visualizations of dates included in the edition of the records of the Imperial Diet, a form of premodern parliament of the Holy Roman Empire, that took place in Regensburg in 1576. As the edition presents information of various kinds, such as transcriptions, document descriptions, and metadata, a large number of dates was recorded and tagged with the standard of the Text Encoding Initiative, and thus made machine-readable. Moreover, there are seven different categories of dates which need to be analyzed differently: dates that head the entries of minutes, dates mentioned in texts and comments, dates that indicate when documents were sent, dates indicating when they were received, or dates indicating when they were copied by the diet's participants, dates indicating when participants arrived at the diet, or dates concerning the duration of archival units in which the diet's files are stored. Visualizations like those presented in this paper help researchers to navigate their way through this mass of dates to identify and investigate those that help answer their research questions, or even to recognize patterns not apparent at first sight, which might lead them to ask new questions.
