Abstract: The problem of improving the antifriction properties of carbon−carbon composites under dry friction conditions has been considered. Dry friction arises at the starting instant of friction when a radial friction-type bearing is activated under the conditions of high temperatures and extremely low adhesion of a lubricant film. The feasibility of preventing the shaft scuffing by reducing the friction coefficient and modifying the carbon composite has been justified. A comparative analysis of the influence of temperature on the friction coefficient of the carbon composite in the as-delivered state and the composite subjected to selenium vapor modification has been carried out. A decrease in the friction coefficient has been confirmed experimentally. The material of modifiers has been found in the surface layers of composites by means of spectral elemental analysis. Based on experimental data it is suggested that bushings made of modified carbon−carbon composites are used in high-temperature bearings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
