Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) production in Argentina is established on sandy soils that are naturally susceptible to degradation leading to soil properties changes linked to how soil management was done. In this context, the valorization of peanut shells, a by-product of peanut industrial processing, has sparked interest as a strategy for sustainable soil management. This study evaluated the impact of ash and biochar organic amendments, derived from peanut shells, on soil fertility, microbial communities, and crop performance. A greenhouse trial with five treatments (control, 1% and 3% ash, and 1% and 3%) biochar) was conducted over three years, assessing chemical, microbiological, phenological, and yield-related parameters. Results showed that biochar increased organic carbon (CO), total nitrogen (NT), enzymatic activity (FDA), and microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen (CBM y NBM), promoted uniform flowering and improved yield and shoot biomass, with stable effects over time. In fact, the application of 3% biochar produced, on average, a 38% increase in CO and a 33% increase in NT compared to the control treatment. The addition of 3% ash increased pH by 20% and electrical conductivity by 60%, although it showed limited effects on soil biology and productivity. Correlation analysis revealed that the microbiological properties (FDA and NBM) were strongly associated with crop yield in contrast with traditional chemical indicators. These findings underscore the significance of biological indicators to evaluate the sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems. In conclusion, the incorporation of peanut shell-derived biochar represents an effective strategy to enhance soil biological quality, optimize nutrient use, and improve crop resilience.
