Abstract: In recent years, micro-fluidic reactor technology has proven to be an effective tool for process chemistry in the chemical, biological, and engineering sciences. Continuous flow chemistry is a process-intensified method that precisely controls reaction rate, scales up synthesis, and produces products with maximum yields as compared to traditional synthesis under one-pot solution processing conditions. The current study has established a continuous multistep flow synthesis of Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), a naturally occurring antioxidant. Research has been carried out to understand the effects of crucial operating factors such as residence time, solvent ratio, reaction temperature and the effect of geometry. In this study, we have concentrated on the important role that reactor geometry plays in improving mixing efficiency. Numerical methods employing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools are used to understand the velocity and pressure profiles, residence times to comprehend the mechanism of mixing. When compared to a channel alone, it was demonstrated that the improved geometry produced a sharp distribution curve. In order, to improve the final yields, a modified reactor design that uses enhancers and reducers is used. When ALA was synthesized using enhanced technology in microreactors, the yield was 71.4% with a selectivity of >99%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
