The author reflects on the ancient Chinese proverb as a doctrine of sustainability. It defines sustainability as a development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It correlates the Chinese proverb with the precautionary principle stating that a precautionary approach must be applied by States according to their capabilities in order to protect the environment. |
