Abstract:	The article offers information on the Cheshire3 project, a research in developing effective and scalable information retrieval (IR) services for digital libraries. It is focused on large-scale digital library collections in a Grid environment. Systems for long term digital preservation are being prototyped. An extensible series of Grid Services is needed in order for IR in the evolving Grid parallel distributed computing environment to work effectively. The system has also been integrated with Datagrid services provided by distributed storage and retrieval systems.
