A method for extracting planar planes from a set of points in three-dimensional (3-D) space using the 3-D Hough transform requires much computation and storage. In this paper, by taking into account that by using the slit-ray method we can collect line data on the surface of an object relatively simply and exactly, we present a method for extracting a plane from a set of line segments in 3-D space using the 3-D Hough transform. In this method we generate Hough curves in the 3-dimensional Hough space (parameter space) by directly performing the Hough transform of lines in 3-dimensional space and then extract planes from intersections (peak points) of these Hough curves. In the existing method for extracting planes from a set of points we had to generate a curved surface in the Hough space for each point. On the other hand, in this method we ony have to generate curves. As a result we could accomplish a decrease in computational costs. Furthermore, we implemented this method using a method for realizing the 3-dimensional Hough space equivalently by sliding a 2-dimensional array in order, from which it was found that extraction of planes with high precision is possible in practical memory space for computation.
