This article discusses the response that the author received to his use of a probability problem in a review of "Digital Dice: Computational Solutions to Practical Probability Problems by Paul J. Nahin. The problem, referred to as the Monty Hall dilemma, related to the probability of finding a prize behind one of three random doors under specific circumstances. Monty Hall is a light hearted reference to the host of the television program "Lets Make A Deal." The computer program, which calculates the probability of each choice being correct, assumes different probability than that assumed by readers, who wrote in to comment. This continuing debate is presented as an example of vital scientific debate. |
