Abstract: The article offers tips on how Web consumers can fight back the subscription trap. It says that companies can make over a billion U.S. dollars by signing up members who do not know that they are becoming members. Based on a survey conducted by credit card firm Visa, almost three in ten U.S. citizens have been victimized by a subscription trap. According to the author, the U.S. Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee led by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia) named Webloyalty, Vertrue and Affinion as the biggest players in such business, which have earned about 1.4 billion U.S. dollars in revenue within a decade. The companies that earned over 10 million U.S. dollars each in the past decade from post-transaction marketing are also mentioned.
