| Abstract: | Rectangular waveguides, containing dielectric layers in the H-plane, are studied. Results on normalized phase constant, cut-off frequency, and attenuation constant under cut-off, are presented for lower-order longitudinal section modes. Data have been computed from characteristic equations obtained by the matching of the tangential field components at the dielectric interfaces. Much information has been published in the case of rectangular waveguides, loaded with slabs of dielectric in the E-plane. Comparatively little information has been presented, however, for H-plane dielectric-loaded waveguides. Most of the attention has been devoted to the two-dielectric-layer case (Collin 1960, Harrington 1961, Van Bladel and Higgins 1951, Weeks 1959), whereas the three-layer waveguide has been analysed by Van Bladel and Higgins (1951) and also by Gardiol and Vander Vorst (1969). The characteristic equations obtained by these authors assume that two of the three layers have identical dielectric constants, and also that the permeability is the same in all layers. The numerical results on cut-off frequency, published by Van Bladel and Higgins, are limited to the dominant mode, while Gardiol and Vander Vorst present data on phase constant, also for the dominant mode.
