Abstract: The IUPAC names for atmospheric oxidation products of terpenes are long and complex. An alternative nomenclature is proposed, which consist of a set of six simple rules. Systematic names are generated by analogy to the well known oxidation products of alpha-pinene and sabinene and applies to aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, epoxides, nitrates, and carboxylic acids derived from the oxidation of endocyclic and terminal C=C double bonds of terpenes. Examples of structures and names are shown for 36 compounds previously identified as atmospheric oxidation products of terpenes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
