Abstract: The article explores the challenges of assessing the ecological impact and risk of sediments. An overview of the development of sediment assessment methods in the U.S. in the 1980s to mid-1990s is presented. It highlights the lack of development in sediment toxicity bioassays and sediment quality guidelines in the U.S. The author offers suggestions to improve sediment assessment including improving field method sensitivity and using context-based assessments.
