| Abstract: |
The article discusses how media and advertisements may influence the development of risky behaviour in adolescents. Heroin, marijuana and gambling addictions are portrayed in television shows such as "Trainspotting," "Weeds" and "Sunshine." A decrease in tobacco consumption was noted in New Zealand, Canada, Finland and Norway when tobacco advertising was prohibited. The author reports that more research is needed to evaluate the role of media effects on adolescents. Research conducted by Gunsekera and colleagues found 32 percent of films studied contained sexual episodes. |
