The article discusses how external motivation can encourage middle and high school students to work harder and learn more. It notes that education is correlated with future income and important measures of quality of life. It adds that the case for holding students accountable for their learning has been undercut by the prevalent belief that incentives and other extrinsic motivators decrease student effort by eroding students' intrinsic desire to learn. |
