Abstract:	Technology holds great educational potentials for language learning (Thorne et al., 2009; Zhao & Lai, 2007) and constitutes an important learning space in the ecology of learning. As smartphones have become more affordable, educators and learners have explored the potential of these devices to extend language learning opportunities beyond the classroom. This paper investigates the use of smartphones for online vocabulary learning assignment given to 105 Japanese university students. Data were collected from self-report closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires. The results suggest that most of the students showed a positive attitude towards online vocabulary learning and receiving feedback from the instructor. Furthermore, Information Technology was found to act as powerful tool for students' engagement in foreign language learning. Finally, the paper discusses implications learning and teaching in the Japanese context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
