Abstract (English): Research from Europe and the United States suggests that children's books show stereotypical images of male and female roles. This study reviewed gender representations in 4th grade' supplementary reading lists in Chile. The corpus of 247 books came from 20 schools from La Pintana, with students from low-income families, and 18 schools from Vitacura, which has mostly students from families with very high income. The presence of female vs. male authors and illustrators was reviewed, as well as the presence and characteristics of male vs. female characters in texts and illustrations. It was concluded, in agreement with previous studies, that gender bias exists. Male characters are associated with leading roles and a wide range of occupations, while female characters are less important and are relegated to "female" occupations. No significant differences by socio-economic status were found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
