| Abstract (English): | Research from Europe and the United States suggests that children's books show stereotypical images of male and female roles. This study reviewed gender representations in 4th grade' supplementary reading lists in Chile. The corpus of 247 books came from 20 schools from La Pintana, with students from low-income families, and 18 schools from Vitacura, which has mostly students from families with very high income. The presence of female vs. male authors and illustrators was reviewed, as well as the presence and characteristics of male vs. female characters in texts and illustrations. It was concluded, in agreement with previous studies, that gender bias exists. Male characters are associated with leading roles and a wide range of occupations, while female characters are less important and are relegated to "female" occupations. | Abstract (Spanish): | Investigaciones realizadas en Europa y Estados Unidos sugieren que los libros infantiles muestran imágenes estereotipadas de los roles femeninos y masculinos. Este estudio revisó las representaciones de género en los planes de lectura complementaria de 4º básico en Chile. El corpus de 247 libros provino de 20 escuelas de La Pintana, con estudiantes de familias de bajos ingresos, y 18 escuelas de Vitacura, que tiene principalmente estudiantes de familias de muy altos ingresos. Se revisó la presencia de autores e ilustradores femeninos vs. masculinos, y la presencia y características de los personajes masculinos vs. femeninos en textos e ilustraciones. Se concluyó, de acuerdo con estudios previos, que existe sesgo de género. Los personajes masculinos están asociados a los roles principales y a una gama amplia de ocupaciones, mientras que los personajes femeninos son menos importantes y están relegados a ocupaciones "femeninas".
