Abstract: An editorial is presented on early childhood years being a critical period for the development of language and literacy skills. Topics include Children's engagement with language and literacy and the subsequent language and literacy development; and children's competency in using the linguistic routines characterising particular relationship contexts being instrumental in cementing group membership.
