Principals play a fundamental role within education. Their role in front of social problems and the challenges of a pedagogical and administrative leading constitute keys to understanding the importance of this position. This article analyzes the trends and the academic purposes of the programs offered in Colombia for prospective principals. For this analysis, we work with the results of a survey conducted in 105 institutions nationwide (universities and non-formal institutions). This study shows that professional development of the principal and his/her management skills require curricular designs that consider social needs and demands, and the exercise of a leadership in decision making that influences the school performance. Los directivos docentes cumplen un papel fundamental a nivel educativo y su rol ante las problemáticas sociales y los retos que supone liderar pedagógica y administrativamente una escuela se constituyen en claves para entender la trascendencia de este cargo. En este artículo se analizan las tendencias temáticas y los propósitos de formación de los programas ofrecidos en Colombia para este cargo. Para ello, se retoman los resultados de un cuestionario aplicado a programas, el cual presenta información de 105 instituciones a nivel nacional (universidades e instituciones no formales). El principal hallazgo de este estudio se relaciona con que el desarrollo profesional y la gestión eficaz del directivo en el marco de la calidad educativa requiere de diseños curriculares que consideren las necesidades, las demandas sociales y el ejercicio mismo del liderazgo en la toma de decisiones que posibilite incidir en los rendimientos escolares.
