The objective of the work is to discuss the relevance of distance education, as well as to reflect on the quality of education in educational modalities other than face-to-face education and the changes that need to be carried out to ensure its quality. It is concluded that there is a need to advance in the design of evaluation models for the accreditation of distance programs, in addition to establishing clear mechanisms to identify in the different official registers the modalities in which the programs are accredited and also to make the processes of accreditation more transparent. evaluation and results, as well as their dissemination. El trabajo tiene como objetivo discutir la relevancia de la educación a distancia, así como reflexionar sobre la calidad de la educación en las modalidades educativas distintas a las presenciales y los cambios que es necesario llevar a cabo para asegurar su calidad. Se concluye que existe la necesidad de avanzar en el diseño de modelos de evaluación para la acreditación de programas a distancia, además de establecer mecanismos claros para identificar en los distintos padrones oficiales las modalidades en las que se acreditan los programas y también transparentar los procesos de evaluación y los resultados, así como su divulgación.
