Abstract (English): Student desertion and terminal efficiency have been a constant concern for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). An analysis of the causes of school dropout is presented from the discourse of students of the Autonomous University of Chihuahua. The analysis was carried out with 1,637 records of temporary and permanent withdrawals from 2010 to 2019 of 1,243 students of the dental surgeon career. The temporary leaves are given by factors: Personal and Family (21.8%), Economic and Labor (21.3%), Maternity (13%) and Vocational (10.4%). Family, economic, work, and maternity factors are more common at an older age. Retention and permanence strategies should focus on the academic aspect, as well as improve admission mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
