Abstract: In the article, the relationship between intelligence and the placing and supporting reactions is studied in a group of cases referred to a clinic for children with cerebral palsy under the age of five. Statistical analysis may in some kinds of enquiries be the wrong tool, actually obscuring, instead of clarifying, clinical facts. This is particularly true of cerebral palsy. The relationship between the placing reaction in the arms and the IQ in the diplegia-quadriplegia group is the same as that in the legs, the placing reaction being sometimes absent when the IQ is lower than 60, absent in over 50 per cent of the cases if the IQ is below 50, and almost always absent if the IQ is below 20, although it should be noted that in a few cases the placing reaction can still be present in spite of quite severe motor involvement. 130 cases were diagnosed as having spastic diplegia or quadriplegia, and 29 cases had athetosis.
