| Abstract: | The University of Tennessee and the Tennessee Geographic Alliance hosted a three-week summer institute funded by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH) to explore the role of geographic mobility in the African American Freedom Struggle. The institute focused on movement as a fundamental theme in geography and highlighted the impact of migration, transportation, and travel and tourism on structural racism and Black antiracist resistance. Participating educators engaged in discussions, lectures, and hands-on activities, and visited museums and historical sites related to African American history and culture. The institute aimed to develop new frameworks for teaching movement and provided resources for educators to incorporate these concepts into their classrooms. [Extracted from the article] |
