Abstract (English): The management of urban solid waste (MSW) is a complex task for the municipal public administration. The aim of this study is to identify the knowledge of the social, public and academic sectors on urban solid waste management in order to raise awareness about its integrated management in Banderilla, Veracruz, Mexico. The used methodology was mixed, involving participatory community workshops aimed at all the three sectors, with diagnostic surveys and environmental awareness activities. The invitation to participate was open to the social sector, 18 workshops were held at high school level (900 students) and one workshop was held for the public sector with area managers and the municipal president. Findings show a high interest in collaboration from all three sectors. Furthermore, improvement opportunities were also identified: zero use of MSW (inorganic and organic), long distance travel for final disposal and high costs for public funds due to the lack of integrated handling. In conclusion, door-to-door and business-by-business (small and large generators) environmental awareness is required for source separation and independent collection, to use organic as well as inorganic MSW.
