| Abstract: | While global conversations about LGBTQI + leadership are growing, the experiences of transgender and non-binary (trans*) leaders, especially outside Western countries, remain significantly under-explored. This study, one of the first in-depth explorations of professional trans* leadership, offers a vital look into how trans* professionals in Bangkok, Thailand navigate their leadership roles within a unique cultural landscape shaped by traditional gender norms, concepts of social harmony (nata), and karma (gam) beliefs. Through in-depth interviews with 16 trans* leaders, this research introduces the ‘T*Factor,’ an exploratory leadership framework detailing how Thai trans* leaders, through complex intersectional identity work, forge distinct pathways to leadership, cultivate culturally informed inner qualities (such as resilience and authenticity), distinct outward behaviors (including nuanced communication and relational approaches), and an ultimate commitment to cross-domain activism. Findings reveal that Thai trans* leaders skillfully integrate multifaceted identities with culturally sensitive strategies to challenge norms and foster inclusivity. A trans*-specific leadership framework, while resonating with broader LGBTQI + leadership theories, the T*factor is distinguished by its unique etiology and expands current understandings of LGBTQI + leadership by detailing trans* leadership dynamics in non-Western settings. The framework offers insights into the uniquely adaptive strategies of trans* leaders, providing policy and practice guidance to foster systemic change for their equitable professional inclusion worldwide.
