Abstract (English): The Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model is an approach that can be used to improve student learning outcomes. This research aims to find out whether the application of the PBL learning model can improve the mathematical problem solving abilities of students in class VIII-2 at SMP Negeri 8 Medan on rank number material. This research uses a classroom action research method which is carried out in two cycles, with each cycle consisting of two meetings. The research subjects were 30 students in class VIII-2 at SMP Negeri 8 Medan, while the object of the research was increasing students' mathematical problem solving abilities through the application of the PBL learning model to the rank material for the 2024/2025 academic year. Based on data analysis, the average student initial test score was 30.83 with only 3 students achieving completion, while 27 students had not yet achieved completion. After implementing the PBL learning model in cycle I, there was an increase in the average score of the problem solving ability test to 74.83 with 21 students achieving completeness, while 9 students had not yet completed it. In cycle II, there was a further increase with the average score of the students' problem solving ability test being 86.83, with 27 students achieving completeness and 3 students not yet completing it. Student completion in cycle II is in the good category, so it can be concluded that learning has been successful, with more than 85% of students achieving completeness in solving problems. Therefore, it can be concluded that the application of the Problem Based Learning learning model can improve students' mathematical problem solving abilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
