| Abstract: | Retention in online learning has often been cited as a challenge for students. One cause is learners' feelings of isolation. This mixed-methods study examined the effectiveness of intelligent agents in online courses in reducing student isolation. A survey was conducted with two online undergraduate courses that were part of an online degree program, followed by student interviews. Survey data revealed a significant positive difference in students' perceptions of teaching presence in sections using intelligent agents.
