| Abstract: | The article describes a high school curriculum that encourages students to explore issues of activism and progressive social change in the U.S. A curriculum and learning opportunities was created to enable students to connect literacy to issues of equity. A yearlong literature curriculum was created around one central theme: social activism. Each project, text and area of study during the initial months of the school year built up to the final three-month unit on social activism. The activism unit was titled Stirring Up Justice. The classes in which it was implemented were made up of a truly diverse population of students who had not been sorted into separate honors of remedial classes based on test scores or previous academic successes and failures. Multiple workshops were also designed to guide students in their learning about activism. |
