Abstract (English): Reading plays a fundamental role in people's lives, as it is through it that the process of communication takes place. From an educational perspective, reading is recognized as a complex process that not only requires reading but also understanding what is read. For this reason, this scientific essay focuses on analyzing the importance of critical reading in students' academic development and its relationship with the results obtained in the SABER 11th Grade - ICFES Tests. To this end, a qualitative documentary perspective is used, focusing on exploring the educational issues related to critical reading, specifically its importance within the SABER 11th Grade - ICFES Tests. Therefore, this scientific essay responds to a documentary design, through a review and analysis of specialized sources. This exhaustive review was carried out through different databases such as SciELO, ERIC, Redalyc, and Dialnet, among other documents of greater interest. The conclusion is that critical reading should not be understood as just another academic skill, but rather as a basic tool for developing students capable of understanding, analyzing, and questioning the information they receive. This is also evident at the university level, where poor reading comprehension alarms the educational system. It is clear that critical reading also tends to boost motivation, a dynamic process that students need to succeed in school; in other words, when students feel motivated and observe improvements in their reading comprehension, they tend to put in more effort in their academic endeavors.
