| Abstract: | The article presents a reprint of the article "Progressive Education Represents the Cause of Freedom in the Field of Learning," by Samuel Engle Burr, Jr., which was published in the May 27, 1951 edition of the newspaper "The Sunday Star." There are several things which progressive education is not. First, progressive education is not new. Second, it is not a process of letting the child do just what he wants to do. Third, it is not child-centered education. Fourth, it does not abandon the teaching of reading, writing, and arithmetic. Fifth, it is not a disease. The following are basic concepts of progressive education: it represents the cause of freedom in the field of learning; it recognizes the period of childhood as a real part of life; the concept of the teacher in a progressive school is the concept of a counselor, a guide, and a friend; and children and adults are most successful in learning those things which are charged with interest for them. |
