Abstract: The article focuses on the middle-class non-vocational lecture and debating subjects in the 19th-century England. Throughout the nineteenth century in England the lecture and debate provided a public focus for social activity. Although in most clubs, societies and institutions the lecture suffered a decline in popularity during the second half of the century it was far from eclipsed. Despite debating never achieving the widespread appeal of the lecture its popularity was impressive with a number of societies such as the Philomathic in Liverpool which was devoted solely to it as a technique in adult education. However, in many of the institutions of the nineteenth century the debate was seen as a supplement to the lecture. It was exceptional for a society to be created just for the purpose of debate. It usually required a town of the size of Liverpool to support such specialization. The article deals with the fashions in lecture and debating subjects which are to be found nationally. Certain subjects were popular throughout the nineteenth century. Notables amongst these were geology and natural history.
