| Abstract: | This article focuses on the development, dissemination, implementation, and evaluation of Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs), civil restraining orders that temporarily restrict firearm access for individuals deemed at risk of violence. Originating after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, ERPO laws were recommended by the Consortium for Risk-Based Firearm Policy, which emphasized evidence-based criteria for firearm restrictions rather than mental illness diagnoses alone. Since the first enactment in California in 2014, 22 states, the District of Columbia, and the Virgin Islands have adopted ERPO laws, supported by coordinated educational efforts, research, and technical assistance to promote effective implementation. The article highlights the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration among researchers, advocates, and policymakers in translating scientific evidence into policy and practice to address gun violence as a public health issue.
