Abstract (English): Transnational mobility has contributed to various flows of patients crossing borders in search of transnational health care. This mobility across borders is due to poor access to or non-existence of treatment in these patients’ countries of origin. This article focuses on the hospital treatment pathway of Esperanza, a Bolivian woman seeking cross-border hospital treatment. The study focuses on illness history and hospital admission, drawing on the meanings of the care pathway assigned by Esperanza, based on a content analysis of field diaries and interviews with the patient and the health team. Esperanza's case is one of inclusion by the Brazilian National Health System (SUS), with an important role being played by the hospital’s social services, permeated by communication difficulties due to language differences and technical terminology, which is usual in a hospital setting.
