This issue of the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement focuses on evolving definitions and practices of community engagement within higher education institutions. It features a Reflective Essay by David Meens addressing the “semantic drift” in Carnegie Foundation’s community engagement definition as it becomes institutionalized, advocating for strategic adaptation in scholarly language. Research articles examine service-learning’s positive impact on student success, particularly for underserved populations, and explore students’ developmental journeys toward critical consciousness in community-based projects. The Projects with Promise section highlights diverse initiatives, including entrepreneurship education for neighborhood revitalization, workforce transition programs, and health literacy partnerships.
