The article focuses on the complexity of teacher training, highlighting the importance of practical judgment in their educational work. It is proposed that the teacher's role goes beyond facilitating measurable learning, as it involves ethically discerning the purpose and meaning of education within a culture, making decisions based on critical study and pedagogy. Furthermore, the reduction of the teaching role to that of a mediator or facilitator is questioned, emphasizing that teacher training should promote autonomous thinking that integrates historical, cultural, and pedagogical knowledge for a humanistic practice. Finally, the need for education faculties to critically analyze educational policies is underscored in order to strengthen the understanding of the cultural and social impact of teaching. "La labor del profesor se basa en el juicio práctico", esta importante y contundente afirmación del doctor Ciro Parra fue la que motivó la escritura del presente ensayo, en el que se plantean algunas ideas que contribuyen a reflexionar sobre la complejidad que reviste la formación de profesores. Estos temas fueron discutidos en diversos momentos con el doctor Parra, quien generosamente nos compartió su saber y sus inquietudes sobre este y otros estos temas educativos fundamentales. Con este breve ensayo se busca rendir un homenaje a su legado. Se exponen someramente tres temas: el primero relaciona la función del profesor con la de los estudiantes; el segundo se refiere al papel que cumple el profesor en la escuela y el último alude a la importancia del juicio práctico en la labor del profesor.
