Abstract (English): The article analyses student representation in Italian schools and proposes an interpretation that moves beyond a bureaucratic view to recognise it as a strategic educational tool. Through an analysis of the regulatory framework, participation is interpreted as an experience of active citizenship. The article examines the pros and cons of the functioning of the Student Councils, understood as laboratories of representative democracy, in which students develop key European competences: citizenship, entrepreneurship, collaboration, communication and digital competence. Engagement in representation takes the form of non-formal learning of high educational value, capable of transforming democratic rights and principles into concrete practices of responsibility, leadership and civic planning.
