| Abstract: |
The article focuses on a Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Fellow’s research in Finland examining how public libraries support K–12 learning and media literacy in the absence of school librarians. It highlights Finland’s model where public libraries proactively partner with schools, embedding curriculum-aligned lessons and fostering trust through self-service and learner autonomy. The researcher contrasts this with challenges in the United States, particularly Pennsylvania, where many students lack school librarian access despite abundant public libraries. Personal and professional reflections emphasize the importance of cultural openness, adaptability, and the concept of "sisu"—Finnish perseverance—in advancing library instruction and leadership. The article concludes with the researcher’s ongoing efforts to pilot a public library–school partnership framework in the U.S. based on Finnish practices. [Extracted from the article] |
