| Abstract: | This study bridges the gap between Deleuze and Guattari's concepts and Bourdieu's framework to explore student transition in higher education (HE). Despite some areas of tension – Deleuze and Guattari provide an analytic lens of extreme fluidity and non-linearity, while Bourdieu presents a somewhat determinist view of social reproduction – these theories are complementary. Their synthesis captures the complex and multifaceted realities of students' lived experiences. Based on interviews with 60 undergraduate students, we summarise four types of habitus change: infusing, aligning, transcending, and retrogressing. They demonstrate the diverse and ongoing transition process of students as being-becoming. When intertwining with or detaching from different transition elements and capital, habitus changes display the assemblage and dis-assemblage of student transition. Moreover, habitus evolvement is structured by the HE field and, in the meantime, it has the agency to proceed in multiple directions in its own way like earthed rhizomes. Suggestions for HE institutions to transform their understandings and practices to facilitate student transition are discussed in the end. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
