| Abstract: | The article discusses the background and history of map making. Ancient people left evidences of making and using maps. The Babylonian collection of the British Museum includes a baked mud map that depicts the exploits of Sargon and shows the land that he ruled. In centers of early higher civilizations, the Egyptians, Greeks, and Chinese used maps of some character. Primitive people devised symbolic methods in showing the significant features of the regions near their homes. The start of scientific geography as connected to map making is the work of some early Greek philosophers such as Aristotle, Thales, and Eratosthenes. |
