| Abstract: | The article points out the fine line between inspiration and imitation facing designers. In 1998, the self-contained, independent-Victorian design style of the literary journal and website "McSweeney's" seemed oddly fresh. The most infamous facsimile was IBM's 2000 annual report, designed by VSA Partners. The IBM report imitated the use of self-consciously epic language, black serif type, all centered on an otherwise blank white page with frequent shifts from small to screaming headline sizes, often within the same line. |
