Abstract: The article presents a mathematics classroom activity for middle school students. The lesson requires students to read the novel "Chasing Vermeer" and the use of pentominoes was only one of the mathematical connections found throughout the novel. It notes that the connections between the literature and the geometry concepts helped students build mathematical understanding.
